Spirit Oil and Danny Marriott at The Boileroom

Thoughts from F**k Cancer Vol 5

Last Saturday I paid a visit to my local music venue, The Boileroom in Guildford. If you're into alternative music and ever find yourself in Surrey I so recommend looking online and seeing what they have on. Typically they host upcoming local artists, tribute acts, and touring performers like Prima Queen, Vistas, and even a Flock of Seagulls, who are playing there next month!

I went to the fifth of their F**k Cancer events, which use the pull of live music to raise money for Macmillan Cancer support. The next one is on the 18th of September if you want to check it out.

Spirit Oil

Spirit Oil seem to know exactly where their music fits within modern indie rock. Effortlessly cool with a self assured sound, this duo, made up of lead singer and bassist, Cameron Day and drummer, James Starkey, are one to watch. With confident vocals and assertive drums, Spirit Oil put on an exciting yet easy show, balancing passion with professionalism. There is a The Neighbourhood sort of sex to their music, the kind of sound that gives a heavy, smoky atmosphere. This permeates into their covers of 'Toxic' by Britney Spears and 'Maniac' by Michael Sembello, and into their original music. For me, 'Sinkhole' was their strongest song closely followed by 'Electric Chair', which had an occasional air of Muse's 'Supermassive Black Hole'. Hopefully both songs will be available to listen to on Spotify soon. From their Instagram feed it seems that original songs are in the process of being recorded, so hopefully the wait shouldn't be too long.

Danny MarriotT

With a quintessentially British alternative sound, Danny Marriott is fast paced and energetic. Lead singer and namesake of the band, Danny Marriott is accompanied by Frankie Almanza on bass, Joe Steele on drums and Daniel Vadolia on lead guitar (who I have seen perform solo once before and is incredibly talented). With inspiration taken from The Wombats and Two Door Cinema Club, Danny Marriott incorporates heavy drums with heady electric guitar and the occasional ripple of synth. There are moments in their music that even feel reminiscent of Green Day's fast, angst filled sound, and these for me hit the hardest. Songs 'Ghost', 'Japan' and 'Faces' have an everyday alternative feel, much like that of The Night Cafe, making them a seamless edition to any indie pop playlist. Full of punch and promise, Danny Marriott have a strong discography, which you can check out here.

Both bands are next playing at the B Side and Beer Festival in Reigate, along with loads of other indie acts.
