Raw and reflective, Oscar Browne's, If Only feels like drifting out on an ochre framed lake on an October morning. Released today, (via So Young Records) this EP establishes an earthy, emotive tone for Oscar's solo career. A talented multi-instrumentalist based in London, Oscar has defined for himself a mature, individual sound that stands strong within the realm of alternative folk.
Combining sentimental song writing with powerful vocals and soft synth, this five track EP overflows with feeling and authenticity. The inclusion of wind instruments and lyrical repetition feels familiar to traditional folk, yet is modern in it's overall sound. A journey through the psyche, If Only opens powerfully with 'Cut Me Off' and mellows into the swelling 'You And I'. With 'All Or Nothing' the EP gains a spring in its step, before settling down into the heartbreaking 'Somebody Else'. Ending with its beautifully haunting title track, If Only is a masterpiece of emotional highs and lows.
I have been following along with Oscar's career since I saw him open for Prima Queen back in May. He holds a grounded and unassuming presence in his performance, one that feels equally safe and stirring. Oscar's voice is distinct, sincere and entirely captivating, the kind of voice that echoes through you and holds you mesmerised in the moment. The energy in a room shifts when he starts to sing. I remember this being especially true of the song "If Only". Oscar Browne is one to watch, and more specifically, one to watch live if you ever get the chance.
